Flowo: A Modern Typewriter for Distraction-Free Writing

Reviving the Classic Typewriter with a Modern Twist

The Flowo typewriter, aptly named for its ability to let words flow effortlessly, is a unique design that breathes new life into an obsolete tool. In a world dominated by computers, tablets, and smartphones, the act of typing has become cluttered with distractions and notifications. Flowo aims to provide a solution by offering a modern typewriter that allows writers to focus solely on their craft.

Inspired by the main components of a traditional typewriter, Flowo features a black cylindrical main body reminiscent of the paper roller. The design also incorporates two side control knobs, which, instead of moving paper, serve as navigation tools. The left knob allows users to navigate the device's menu, while the right knob enables scrolling through the document, moving from one row to the next or from one page to another.

The main body of Flowo expands to reveal a backlit keyboard, providing a comfortable and familiar typing experience. The text is displayed on an e-ink screen located on the main body, offering a clear and easy-to-read interface. This combination of classic design elements and modern technology creates a seamless and distraction-free writing environment.

Flowo is made using recycled plastic injection molding for the main body, contributing to its eco-sustainability. The use of e-ink display and other eco-plastic materials further enhances its environmental impact. With dimensions of 330 x 165 x 40mm, Flowo is compact and portable, making it an ideal companion for writers on the go.

Designed by Jody Del Bianco, Flowo is the result of a month-long project based in Azzano Decimo, Italy. The design process involved extensive research to create a modern and functional design for an object that is no longer in use but holds sentimental value. The challenge was to strike a balance between preserving the essence of the typewriter while incorporating modern features.

Flowo has received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Flowo's eco-sustainability, user-friendly interface, and seamless integration of classic and modern design elements have contributed to its success.
